We Stand for Lives Changed by Christ

A blue heart with a house and a cross inside of it.

Birkenhead is close to Liverpool. It’s just a small town with a population of less than 90,000. In 2012, some senior brothers and sisters went to Birkenhead to pay a visit to the sisters there. Seeing how they treasured the love for God in so many years, we built the church in Birkenhead at the end of 2012.

In the beginning, though there were only eight of us meeting in a small room, it was precious God was with us. In the following three years, there were continuously brothers and sisters coming respectively from Hong Kong, Canada, and other districts in the UK to help in setting up gospel meetings and  the road of gospel preaching was widened. In the recent few years, brothers and sisters from Hong Kong and other cities in the UK also came to give us support, making God’s family in Birkenhead grow steadily and experience the blessings brought forth from a unified church.

Looking back, we found how God’s encouragement, presence and blessings enabled us to stride along with our heads up even in adversities.

The Starting of Children’s Work

“Let the children come to me.” Matthew 19:14
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
Encouraged by these two verses in the bible, in mid-2013, we started our children’s work. As what we had in hand was no more than five cakes and two fish, we relied a lot more on God’s grace. In that year, two sisters, after their baptism, immediately took up the children’s work. We began to have Sunday school starting from having three children to now having two big groups: the junior group (Year 7 to university) and the kids’ group (4 to11- year-old).

The Attraction of Living in Harmony

In the 90’s, God also successively led a group of university students from Hong Kong to have their accommodation near the church’s meeting place. They loved each other and pursued God together. The warmth and joy in God’s family attracted many brothers and sisters and their friends to stay in the meeting place, sharing thoughts about their life and beliefs and having meals together. Then they believed in God one after the other. Even their English college teacher Robin gradually integrated into the life in God’s family and was baptized later to follow Jesus and live with the brothers. At that time, the church began to set up English group meetings to shepherd brothers and sisters and reach out to English speaking friends.

Many treasures in Birkenhead

There is a Chinese saying, “Elders are treasures.” We thanked God that He opened a way for the elders. One by one they were saved, longed for God and treasured God’s home. As what is said in the Psalms:

‘They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.’

What’s more precious is that a few couples have both spouses believing in God. They came to meetings and walked God’s way hand in hand.

‘Jehovah-Jireh’ --- The Lord will provide

‘Jehovah-Jireh’, We experienced God’s timely provision. We recall when we started to have meetings at Birkenhead, we underwent lots of difficulties. On the one hand we rented community halls for Sunday gatherings, on the other hand, we looked for properties for rent in different places for accommodation. We thanked God that His preparation was in time. Through a sister’s husband, we successfully rented a meeting place. But following the growth of the congregation, a bigger venue was needed. Once again we experienced ‘Jehovah-Jireh’ — The Lord’s rich provision.

Exemption of Business Tax and Council Tax Approved!

God’s grace was one upon the other. Our application for the exemption of business tax and council tax was successful. Thanks to God.

New Meeting Place

In May 2017, we started to have meetings in the new venue! The one and a half years’ construction work brought so much hardship and tears, but again and again God gave us His words and encouragement, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction. The glory and joy can overwhelm the past grievances.” The renovation was completed. We finally had our own place for gatherings. We still remember that day, after worship service, everyone in God’s family, from kids to elders, helped in the moving of stuffs. We learned from the experience of moving bricks in Lam Tin years ago. We stood in a long line, passing the stuffs from one to another and we finished the task very quickly.

A New Milestone

Following the UK Government’s change of immigration rules for Hong Kong people, many brothers and sisters immigrated to the UK via the BNO Visa route. Their talent and competence made up for our inadequacy. Besides, for the other Hong Kong immigrants, we earnestly hope that we can bring Jesus’ glorious gospel to them.

We need more space...

However, once again we faced the problem of having limited space for meetings. The young brothers and sisters had to set up a gazebo at the backyard for meetings.

We Purchased our Current Property!

Thanks to God! Once again we experienced His name ‘Jehovah-Jireh’, the Lord’s rich provision. In July 2021, we were able to purchase our current property. As the weather was turning cold, we prayed more earnestly. God really knew and answered our needs. On 12 October, we received the Government’s permit for the transfer of land use. Yes! The new meeting place could be officially in use! Our young brothers and sisters could be away from the cold!

"Light of Dawn" Meeting

Every Sundays’ ‘Light of Dawn’ meetings have been carried out for years. Through these meetings, many non-believers have come to know God and many of them have changed from being friends of the church to becoming brothers and sisters. Hallelujah!
